#103 A Drunk Driver Killed My Husband, Christ Told Me to Forgive - Christi Lawson

Christi Hottman Lawson was a faithful wife and mother serving the Lord where He had placed her. Then one night, her peaceful life was brought to a screeching halt and she was forced to consider... how would a just God ask her to respond to the drunk driver who had brought her so much pain?

Smoke. Glass. Heat.

Christi opened her eyes, blinking slowly, but all she could see was swirling gray… and all she could hear was an odd, crackling sound.

“Where… where am I?”

Then, in a moment, it all came flooding back.

The dark highway, cars zooming by… her husband Dan joking, smiling at her… their three kids laughing in the backseat… an SUV suddenly swerving out of oncoming traffic, accelerating towards them… blinding headlights… a deafening crash…

“Mom! Mom! Come on, you have to get out!”

“Hannah…”

At the sound of her 18-year-old daughter’s screams, Christi jolted to the present and suddenly realized: she was stuck in their car on the side of the highway.

And it was on fire.

Hannah stood outside, coughing and tugging desperately at her mom’s jammed door as Christi tried to shield herself from the flames licking hungrily all around her.

“Dan!”

Thick, oily smoke filled Christi’s lungs as she twisted in her seat towards her husband, and searing pain gripped her chest and torso.

Dan was also struggling, pinned in his seat behind the steering wheel, as Winston, their oldest son, frantically tried to open his father’s door from the outside. Christi could barely make out

Erica, their youngest daughter, just 12-years-old, huddled on the ground nearby.

Suddenly, something ignited within the engine, and Christi gasped as a wave of suffocating heat hit her already-blistering skin. Winston stepped back from the car and yelled at his sisters over the roar of the fire,

“Get back, get away from the car! It’s going to explode!”

Winston grabbed Erica, pushing her away from the car, before attacking his father’s door again. Even through her watering eyes and the flames, Christi could see the despair on his face.

“God please… don’t let our kids watch us die like this…”

The fire roared hungrily, as its scorching fingers reached for Christi and Dan…

Listen now to Christi Lawson share her
true story of faith and forgiveness.
